Save the Earth Fest 2001 Nets $4000
The stellar line-up, tremendous turnout, and super-charged energy into the wee hours of the morning would have justified the price of admission. The chance to see an All-Star Jam with members of the David Nelson Band, Gregg's Egg's, and several special guests was icing on the cake.
But the fact that Save the Earth Fest 2001 also raised $4000 for the Save the Earth Foundation meant a very worthy cause benefited big time. This April Earth Day event, held at Slim's in San Francisco, was produced by Ken Margolis Associates and sponsored by Premium Network.
The David Nelson Band got the rocking and rolling started by displaying a wonderful set, including The Grateful Dead's The Wheel. Master of ceremonies David Gans of Dead to the World and the Grateful Dead Hour kept the subsequent acts flowing.
During the live Rock & Roll memorabilia fundraising auction, items from artists such as Aretha Franklin, the Rolling Stones, Gregg Allman, Kiss, and Ozzy Osbourne were auctioned off. Another silent auction continued throughout the night. All proceeds from the evening directly benefited Save the Earth.
Next up was Gregg's Egg's with members of Zero. Gregg's Egg's was joined on stage by special guest Roy Rogers, the legendary blues slide guitarist. Another surprise: Wavy Gravy rapped to one of Gregg's Egg's songs.
Merl Saunders was honored with Save the Earth's first annual Environmental Achievement Award for his outstanding achievement in helping to save the environment.
The evening climaxed in an All-Star Jam with members of the David Nelson Band and Gregg's Egg's playing with Pete Sears of Jefferson Starship and Hot Tuna, Merl Saunders, and David Gans. Thank you to all musicians, volunteers, and supporters who helped make it a night to remember!
